Job Description

Job Purpose
The Metallurgical Superintendent is responsible for all quality Assurance /Quality Control (QA/QC) activities within the department, including plant data management, efficiencies, and researching into opportunities for the future. In order to support department operations, the incumbent will advise the operations team technically, assist in establishing a reliable metallurgical data management system, and promptly and meaningfully communicate technical information to plant management and other relevant parties. As an integral part of the process leadership team, the metallurgical superintendent works closely with stakeholders to foster employee development and maintain a cost-efficient, safe, and productive operation. The incumbent is also responsible for maintaining and supporting the principles of safety and environmental policies as well as all regulatory requirements of the process plant.
 
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
  • Maintain strict enforcement of HSE regulations and policies with no room for exceptions. This includes providing a safe work environment by setting an example that allows risks to be identified, evaluated, and controlled to ensure that activities be completed without running the risk of harm or injury. This also includes investigating all work-related injuries, and incidents and developing action plans to stop them from occurring
  • again, as well as assisting the Metallurgy Department reach its goal of achieving no reportable Safety and Environmental incidents, no compliance violations to regulatory requirements/policies.
  • Ensure that metallurgical output and efficiency levels meet financial obligations and budget, and establish,track, and document all process plant control methods and metallurgical parameters as well as provide comprehensive support for laboratory operations to guarantee the best assay and sample techniques are applied.
  • Provide recommendations for commodity consumption, monitor reagents and other consumables.
  • Assist in departmental budget compilation and cost control activities and maintain an efficient metal accounting system. This includes managing authorization for capital expenditure that will improve throughput, reduce cost or improve efficiencies.
  • Provide timely and accurate weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports that clearly communicate the state of plant safety, cost, schedule, and quality. This includes keeping track of agreed-upon actions, meeting minutes, and follow-up to make sure they're done.
  • Lead improvement projects, take initiative in addressing identified areas for continuous improvement, supervise the metallurgical laboratory, give staff members direction and guidance, and offer technical and practical solutions to operational challenges.
  • Maintain the risk and risk mitigation plans and activities for all process operation work scopes and change management relating to the processing plant operations and infrastructure.
  • Develop and put into effect sample policies for gathering and reporting data. This includes being responsible for developing, reviewing and approval of all SOPs and facilitate their implementation.
  • Coordinate the calibrations and certifications of process monitoring equipment. Offering field assistance for technical troubleshooting, ensure Metallurgical research techniques, such as test work procedures, circuit and financial modeling, are demonstrated.
  • Lead the team effectively and ensure all targets are met in line with KPI and company parameters. This includes ensuring that employee training is kept updated in line with the mine's future requirements and present business objectives.
  • Maintain plant availability and utilization by coordinating and collaborating with the maintenance team to create efficient maintenance schedules.
  • Performs any other related duties assigned by the Supervisor based on the exigencies of the Company.

Required Skills or Experience

Minimum qualification (s)

  • Degree in Mineral Processing, Metallurgical, Materials Science, Chemical or related engineering discipline.
  • MINCOM Superintendent competency certificate
  • Valid Driver’s License

 

Experience

  • 10 years of working experience in base metal or precious metal processing plants, 5 years of experience in a managerial role in a gold-processing plant operations.
  • Previous experience in a gold processing laboratory.
  • Operation/technical management experience in crushing, grinding, flotation and CIL.
  • Experience of the pre-treatment of fine-grained disseminated refractory gold ore, such as fine grinding and oxidation.
  • Experience in construction, commissioning and technical transformation of new processing plants is desirable.

 

Knowledge

  • In-depth practical knowledge of methods and procedures related to gold recovery plants and procedures.
  • Advanced knowledge of mineral processing principles and industry standards.
  • Advanced knowledge of processing plant equipment.

  • Strong ability to effectively communicate in English (written and oral).
  • Provide specialized advise on process and industrial practice to the process,team, as required.
  • Identify and study processing options and operating practices, to improve the performance of the department.
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Advanced computer literacy skills – MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook), and SAP.
