Established in 2005, Fairtrade Africa is the independent non-profit umbrella organization representing all Fairtrade certified producers in Africa. Currently, the organization represents over 1,083,139 producers across 28 countries in Africa.
Fairtrade Africa is owned by its members, who are African producer organizations certified against international Fairtrade Standards producing traditional export commodities such as coffee, cocoa, tea, cut flowers, cane sugar, wine, cotton, bananas, mango, pineapples and non-traditional commodities including shea butter, rooibos tea, vegetables and fresh and dry fruits. Fairtrade Africa is made up of both Small Producer Organizations (SPOs) and Hired Labour Organizations (HLO). In HLOs, the focus is on supporting companies that employ hired labour to supply better working conditions for their workers while in SPOs the focus is on members who are smallholders who run their farms mainly using their own and their family labour.

Job Description
CALL FOR CONSULTANT (S) – Training on Occupational Health and Safety
ABOUT SANKOFA PROJECT
Sankofa project is supported by its partners to assist its farmers to increase their productivity and income earning abilities from their farming endeavors using sustainable production practices for smallholder producers. The project contributes to 3-pillars of sustainable livelihoods (social, economic and environmental) of stakeholders in the cocoa and associated crops value chains (VCs) through a multi-stakeholder approach on income diversification, climate resilience and biodiversity conservation. The initiative includes rejuvenation of old and unproductive cocoa fields using the Dynamic Agro Forestry (DAF) system that combines the cropping of cocoa, timber, biomass, fruit trees and annual crops such as yam, maize, plantain, cassava, cowpeas and vegetables on the same plot of land. Ultimately, project farmers will have cocoa field fully rejuvenated in an environmentally sustainable way with timber and fruit trees proving shade to the cocoa and yielding additional income to the farmer.

ASSIGNMENT PURPOSE
The organization is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its staff, partners, and field workers. As part of its Dynamic Agroforestry (DAF) initiatives, staff and youth workers engage in activities such as operating machinery (e.g., chainsaws), handling tools, and performing physically demanding tasks that pose occupational health and safety risks.
To address these risks and reduce incidents of injuries in the field, the organization seeks to engage a consultant to provide comprehensive Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) training. This training aims to equip participants with knowledge and skills to minimize workplace hazards and adhere to safety protocols.
ASSIGNMENT OBJECTIVES
The primary objective of this training is to improve the knowledge, awareness, and practices of field workers and project staff regarding occupational health and safety, ensuring a safer and more efficient working environment. Specifically, the training will:
- Educate participants on OHS principles and best practices.
- Identify workplace hazards associated with DAF plot installation activities.
- Train participants in the safe handling and operation of tools and machinery, including chainsaws.
- Introduce standard operating procedures (SOPs) for specific tasks to reduce risks.
- Develop a safety-conscious culture among staff and field workers.
SCOPE OF WORK
The consultant will be required to:
- Design and deliver OHS training tailored to the needs of the participants.
- Conduct a risk assessment specific to DAF activities and include it in the training material.
- Develop training modules on:
- Hazard identification and risk assessment.
- Safe handling and operation of chainsaws and tools.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Emergency response and first aid techniques.
- Prepare and distribute training manuals, including SOPs for tools and machinery.
- Facilitate a practical session where participants can demonstrate safe practices.
- Provide a post-training report summarizing key observations, participant performance, and recommendations.
SPECIFIC RESULTS AND DELIVERABLES
The Consultant(s) will provide:
The consultant is expected to deliver the following:
- Inception report with training agenda and detailed modules (to be submitted for review prior to the training).
- Training manuals, including SOPs, in hard and soft copies.
- A four-day training session for up to 137 participants.
- Pre- and post-training assessments to evaluate participants' learning.
- A comprehensive training report, including recommendations for follow-up actions.
Note: All other expenses of the consultant are to be included in the financial proposal
SCHEDULE
The consultancy will run from December 2024 to February 2025, with the training to be conducted from 20th to 23rd January 2025 and all deliverables submitted by February 2025
Required Skills or Experience
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
The consultant(s) for the assignment must be registered and have the full statutory requirements to work in Ghana. They must demonstrate full competence in implementing the scope of work and experience in conducting OHS training. Desired competencies include:
- A minimum of a graduate degree in a related area;
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience in developing and facilitating training workshops, particularly training of instructors;
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in OHS training approaches
- Examples of workshop materials previously developed;
