Job Description
UMA is seeking to employ qualified, experienced, and motivated Radio Communications Technician to join our Electrical Team. This is Obuasi based Fixed Term position with a competitive work roster at its operations in Obuasi. Remuneration package includes attractive salary and performance-based incentive payments for the right candidates.

Radio and Communication Technician
Reporting to the Electrical Foreman, the successful candidate will be responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing radio communication systems and equipment used in mining operations. The role ensures seamless communication between operational teams to support safety, efficiency, and coordination on-site.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Install, configure, and test radio communication equipment, including handheld radios, base stations, repeaters, antennas, and associated systems.
- Conduct preventive maintenance and routine inspections of radio communication systems to ensure optimal functionality.
- Diagnose and resolve issues with radio communication equipment promptly.
- Replace or repair faulty components to minimize downtime.
- Update firmware and software for communication systems as needed.
- Monitor radio frequency (RF) networks for interference and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
- Maintain accurate records of equipment inventory, repairs, and maintenance schedules.
- Provide training and technical support to users of radio communication equipment.
- Ensure proper usage and handling of communication devices to extend their lifespan.
- Adhere to safety protocols and regulations while working with communication equipment.
- Ensure compliance with local and international communication standards.
- Complete various daily, weekly, monthly reports as required.
- Ensure safety by adhering to all mining safety protocols and using proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow safety guidelines to prevent accidents.
- Participate in safety meetings and contribute to a safe work environment.
- Be open to learning new methods and be willing to share your skills and knowledge with co-workers
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping in the shop and at job sites
Required Skills or Experience
- Must possess a minimum of BSc. in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Telecommunications Engineering from a recognized University with minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a Hard Rock Underground Mines or Diploma in Electrical/Electronic or Telecommunication Engineering with minimum of 10 years’ experience working in a Hard Rock Underground Mines
- Must possess a valid Ghanaian driving and operating licenses (C & E Classes) and able to drive manual SUV underground.
- Proven experience in radio communication systems, VHF/UHF radios, and RF equipment.
- Ability to influence and engage with operational and non-operational employees and contractors with strong demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills
- Must be conversant with the Mining Act and related regulations of the Republic of Ghana
- Familiarity with signal analysis tools and diagnostic equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics.
- Ability to learn new tasks quickly as well as train, coach, and mentor crew members
- Strong sense of urgency and outcomes focused
- Ability to work in a cross-cultural environment
- Ability to work both day and night.
