Job Description

Background
The Feed the Future Ghana Trade and Investment Activity (GTI) aims to grow and diversify exports to boost national GDP and household income for Ghanaian citizens through the adoption and enforcement of internationally recognized standards along agricultural value chains, the reduction in time and cost to move goods across borders, and increased investment, especially among small and medium enterprises. 
A component of GTI is to improve the quality of high-value agricultural goods and products by strengthening traceability systems, incentivizing SME awareness and use of these systems, and ensuring that the enforcement of SPS standards aligns at the national and international levels. To do this, the project seeks to support export-oriented enterprises in adopting and achieving compliance with internationally recognized market-driven standards.
 
Overview
GTI is seeking to roll out a 6 month internship program for interested graduates in food safety, quality standards and Food Quality Management. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in promoting food safety and quality standards in Ghana's agricultural sector.  The intern will work closely with selected agribusinesses in agro-processing, exporters, business service providers, and export associations. We encourage graduates to apply if they are passionate about food safety, regulatory compliance, and making a tangible difference in the agricultural sector/value chain.
 
Key Responsibilities 
This role provides an intern with a valuable opportunity to learn and engage in the following activities:
  • Collaborate with the Quality team within the assigned SMEs to prepare internal controls and documentation that encourage adopting and adhering to food safety principles and quality standards. These include internationally recognized standards like HACCP, GlobalGAP, Codex standards, and more, aiming to meet the quality requirements of off-takers.
  • Establish a close working relationship with the assigned SME's, key stakeholders, such as farmers and processors, to ensure their readiness for quality audits.
  • Participate in employee training, educating them on the best practices for food safety, hygiene, and proper handling procedures. This training is crucial to preventing contamination of food products and related hazards.
  • Contribute to creating standard operating procedures (SOPs) tailored for key project beneficiaries. Organize meetings or workshops to effectively convey and put into action these SOPs among the intended beneficiaries.
  • Provide assistance in comprehending and adhering to the relevant standards enforced by organizations such as the Food and Drug Authority (FDA), Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as well as essential concepts like Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) and Good Manufacturing Practices.
  • Undertake additional responsibilities as necessary to support to support the SME.

Required Skills or Experience

  • A degree in fields related to the position, such as Food Science and Engineering, Food Technology, Postharvest Technology, Food Safety, Food Quality Management, Agriculture, Agronomy, or similar disciplines from an accredited tertiary institution. An HND/diploma certification will require 2years of industrial experience in food-related industries.  
  • Demonstrable knowledge of upstream food safety and quality standards, including but not limited to GMP, HACCP, Global GAP, ISO 22000, Codex norms etc.  Prior exposure to and/or familiarity with food science and processing concepts.
  • Strong communication skills in writing and speaking are crucial for effective interaction within our team and stakeholders. Proficiency in a local language would be an asset. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Interest in product / process development, food manufacturing.
  • Experience working in a laboratory environment, regulatory affairs, food manufacturing or quality assurance 
  • Ability to perform data analysis.
