Job Summary
The Long Hole Driller is responsible for executing accurate long-hole drilling in mining operations to ensure efficient ore extraction. The role requires precision and involves setting up and operating specialized drilling equipment to ensure efficient ore extraction while adhering to safety and production targets.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate long-hole drilling rigs such as Solo or other underground drill rigs as per work instructions.
- Drill blast holes to specified depths, angles, and diameters in accordance with mine designs.
- Collaborate with blasting crews to ensure proper hole placement for effective fragmentation.
- Adjust drilling parameters based on ground conditions to maximize efficiency and hole accuracy.
- Ensure proper alignment of drilling rigs to achieve optimal hole positioning and trajectory.
- Adhere to all underground safety protocols, mine regulations, and company standard operating policies and procedures.
- Conduct pre-operational inspections of drilling equipment to ensure safety and functionality
- Follow proper handling procedures for explosives and assist with blasting operations when required under the supervision of a qualified blast man.
- Identify and report hazards, unsafe conditions, or equipment malfunctions and report any defects or hazards.
- Monitor the performance of drill rigs and report breakdowns or mechanical issues for maintenance.
- Maintain cleanliness and proper housekeeping in the drilling work area to ensure smooth operations.
- Assist in troubleshooting and minor servicing of drilling equipment.
- Work closely with mining engineers, geologists, and line supervisor to optimize drilling performance.
- Accurately record drilled hole locations, depths, and angles for quality control.
- Ensure drilling is completed within the required timeframes to meet production targets
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance drilling productivity.
- Provide regular updates to supervisors on drilling progress and any challenges encountered.
- Maintain detailed records of drilling operations, including shift reports, equipment logs, and safety inspections.
- Participate in shift change meetings and ensure proper communication between shifts.
Required Skills or Experience
- Minimum of a High School Certificate or equivalent.
- Diploma in drilling from a recognized university is a plus
- Technical or vocational training or certification in underground drilling is an advantage.
- At least 3-5 years of experience as a Long Hole Driller in an underground mining environment
- Experience operating various types of long-hole drilling equipment (e.g. Sandvik, Atlas Copco, Boomer) is a plus.
- Must possess a valid Ghanaian driving and operating licenses (C & E Classes) and able to drive manual SUV.
