Job Description
A vacancy exists in our Occupational Health and Safety Department for the position of: UNIT MANAGER - SAFETY
JOB PURPOSE
The incumbent will develop, coordinate, and implement health and safety management systems across the operational and other areas of the mine.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop, monitor, and coordinate the implementation of safety management systems across the mine in compliance with local and international legislation and best practice.
- Ensure all health and safety activities on the mine are conducted in compliance with local and international legislation and best practice.
- Develop, review, and implement risk management systems that can identify and manage risk that guarantees that the mitigating controls implemented will reduce injury and property damage.
- Ensure, lead and/or participate in incident reporting, investigation to find the root causes of all incidents and taking remedial actions to prevent future occurrence.
- Develop and manage the monthly costs for the unit and perform regular analysis and cost control measures to stay within budget and identify opportunities to reduce cost.
- Coordinate and conduct health and safety training with relevant stakeholders for all employees, contractors, and visitors.
- Work with all stakeholders such as Heads of departments, business partners, sub-contractors, and suppliers to ensure all health and safety policies and procedures are adhered to.
- Liaise with Inspectorate Division of the Minerals Commission of Ghana and other state agencies on health and safety matters and ensure compliance with all statutory obligations.
- Work cross-functionally as a critical business partner, fostering a culture that drives positive safety mindset and climate to support operational productivity and success.
- Ensure that appropriate systems are in place to supervise the review and training on safe operating procedures (SOPs) and job hazard analysis (JHAs) pertaining to their place of work.
- Design and implement an emergency response and crisis management systems for the mine.
- Apply the appropriate disciplinary actions in the circumstance of unsatisfactory job performance, gross inefficiency, or unacceptable personal conduct.
- Ensure that all directives, site notifications, policies and procedures, announcement and any other information meant for the workforce has been well communicated to employees under your supervision and records of the communication documented.
Required Skills or Experience
Knowledge
- Must have a minimum of a Degree in Mining Engineering, Geology, Environmental and Safety Engineering or related discipline from a recognized institution.
- Must have a minimum of seven (7) years of experience in safety practice in an operating mine or related industries.
- Must demonstrate good working knowledge of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act, 703) and related national and international regulations.
- Must possess the appropriate professional and statutory certifications obtained from the Minerals Commission of Ghana.
- Must demonstrate strong knowledge of safety management systems and practices in line with the appropriate national laws and legislations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suites.
- Must have a valid Driving license, with a minimum of five (5) years driving experience.

- Proven communication, organizational and interpersonal skills
- Good analytical skills to evaluate information and solve problems;
- Ability to manage project from start through its cycle;
- Must demonstrate high level of assertiveness and emotional maturity;
