Background

The Rainforest Alliance (RA) is creating a more sustainable world by using social and market forces to protect nature and improve the lives of farmers and forest communities.

The Rainforest Alliance and the Läderach (Schweiz) AG began collaborating in 2013 and have since implemented various phases of the 'Family Life' project in the Central Region of Ghana, around the protected biodiversity hotspot of Kakum. Through this project, significant strides have been made to empower and better the lives of local communities by improving community income through growing sustainable local enterprises. The project has focused on the following three scopes of work: improving productivity through training and coaching in best management practices, paying premiums from certification, and supporting business and income diversification. This project has also promoted the sensitisation of local cocoa-growing communities to the Worst Forms of Child Labour.

The project is seeking to support 11 farmers in the project communities i.e. Paaso, Bobi, Nyamebekyere and Somnyamekodur with seed capital in the form of start-up kits for diversification enterprises.
