Job Description

  • REPORTING TO: Acting Country Representative
  • LOCATION: Accra, Ghana
  • ASSIGNMENT LENGTH: One year, renewable subject to mutual agreement and availability of funds.
SHORT PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Population Council is part of the consortium implementing the USAID Social Marketing and Private Sector Activity which seeks to contribute to strengthening Ghana’s Total Market Approach (TMA) for family planning. 
 
POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Project Manager position will represent the Council on the consortium and ensure successful implementation of the activities related to the Project components for which the Council is responsible. The Senior Project Manager will work closely with the corresponding members in the Project’s lead team to achieve overall objectives and targets. The Senior Project Manager will coordinate and manage the Council’s day-to-day implementation and monitoring of the activities as well as prepare reporting elements to the project lead and other stakeholders such as the Ghana Health Service. The Senior Project Manager will ensure the quality, methodological rigor, ethical standards, and program and policy relevance of all research activities, and contribute to research capacity strengthening efforts. 
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Coordinate and manage the day-to-day backstopping and support, management and implementation of activities related to the Project components for which the Council is responsible.
  • Participate in regular calls and meetings with corresponding members in the Project’s lead team; prepare and make presentations at meetings, workshops and conferences representing the Council and/or the Project.
  • Lead the development of research protocols for all studies, including design and developing questionnaires, guides and manuals; coordinate and oversee the submission process for ethical approval.
  • Organize and manage training of research data collectors, field data collection, provide technical support for data management for both primary and secondary data, analysis, and report writing.
  • In collaboration with colleagues from Project’s lead team and under the supervision of the Study Coordinator, write activity reports and prepare publications including briefs, project summaries, and peer-reviewed manuscripts.
  • Supervise financial and administrative functions related to field activities.
  • Contribute to dissemination efforts to communicate scientific information in formats understandable and usable to different audiences such as policy makers, program managers, donors and ministry representatives.
  • Contribute to effectively resolving issues arising as related to the implementation of activities.
  • Travel as needed to Project activity sites for technical assistance, training, monitoring and supervision.

Required Skills or Experience

  • A minimum of a Master’s degree in demography, social sciences, health sciences, public health, or related field, or comparable combination of education and experience with demonstrated expertise in social or bio-medical science research.
  • A minimum of five years of experience working in research or implementation science with solid experience in monitoring and evaluation, preferably in social marketing.
  • At least three years’ experience in managing reproductive health or related research or programs.
  • Solid understanding of research and data collection activities, including implementation science, qualitative design, quantitative survey design, qualitative and quantitative data analysis, and research utilization.
  • Proven training skills and ability to provide technical support in data quality assurance to a varied group of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of internal and external partners including private healthcare providers and Ghana Health Service.
  • Strong management and organizational skills; ability to handle a heavy workload with competing priorities; ability to work independently and manage varied and numerous tasks. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office as well as qualitative and quantitative data analysis software.
  • Strong writing, communication, presentational and organizational skills.
  • Willingness to travel within Ghana’s regions/districts.
