Project HOPE has implemented more than 500 programs in over 130 countries in a wide range of healthcare areas including HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB), malaria, reproductive maternal new-born and child health, and non-communicable diseases. Project HOPE is legally registered to operate in Ghana (registration number ET001021222) since December 2022 to conduct and support programs and activities aimed at solving some of the world’s greatest public health challenges, with a specific focus on enabling health workers to have the greatest possible impact on the health of the people they serve, strengthening and improving health systems, providing disaster and humanitarian relief and fostering and promoting health policy research and thought leadership.

Job Description

  • LOCATION: Tamale, Wa, Bolgatanga, Sekondi Takoradi, Damongo (note that Project HOPE will not be covering relocation expenses)

  • REPORTS TO: RMNCH Senior Technical Advisor

BACKGROUND ON Ghana IHP
The purpose of the USAID-funded Ghana Integrated Health Partnership (IHP) activity to contribute to the Government of Ghana’s strategies to reduce preventable maternal, newborn and child deaths, including stillbirths, and improve their overall health and wellbeing by 2030. Activities are expected to advance Ghana toward increased localization, strengthening the capacity of Ghana institutions and local organizations to introduce, deliver, scale-up, and sustain the use of evidence-based, quality Reproductive Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH), Nutrition, family planning, malaria, and global health security services. The project will increase access, utilization and quality of maternal and child health, family planning, malaria, and nutrition services to reduce preventable maternal, newborn and child deaths in northern Ghana.

Job Summary
The district clinical specialist develops and supports the implementation of RMNCAH programme and interventions towards the quality health care and ultimately the eliminating preventable maternal and newborn deaths. The specialist must be a nurse or midwife with a strong clinical and public health background and experience mentoring other service providers. The successful candidate will oversee clinical mentorship activities and provide supportive supervision, technical guidance and ensure high quality service delivery within the Ghana Health Service Networks of Practice(NOP).

Key Responsibilities
1. Clinical Leadership

  • Provide technical and operations oversight to clinical mentors within the NOP
  • Provide facilitative and supportive supervision
  • Ensure adherence to protocols, guidelines and international best practices
  • Team management of mentors and mentees
  • Supervision and support for clinical mentors
  • Foster teamwork and promote collaboration
  • Work closely with the regional training coordinators within the Ghana Health Services

2. Program Implementation

  • Establish guidelines for succession planning
  • Conduct clinical capacity gap assessment
  • Oversee RMNCAH, Nutrition and malaria implementation interventions
  • Develop plans, monitor progress, identify good practices for scale-up
  • Oversee data collection, reporting and analysis

3. Capacity building

  • Develop and implement training plans for mentors and other providers
  • Facilitate workshops, training sessions and coaching
  • Conduct regular site visits and provide technical assistance
  • Monitor and report on service quality
  • Conduct periodic client satisfaction surveys

4. Collaboration and partnership

  • Liaise with regional and district stakeholders, NGOs, religious and traditional authorities etc.
  • Foster partnership to enhance community ownership and service delivery.

Required Skills or Experience

Qualification and Experience

  • Professional Nurse or midwife with at least 10 years of continuous clinical practice
  • Additional education in Public Health preferred
  • Proven experience in clinical capacity building and leadership role

Strong Knowledge of RMNCAH, Nutrition and

  • malaria interventions and national guidelines.
  • Familiarity with quality improvement methods
  • Experience working with international organisations

Physical demands:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be mobile in the healthcare facility environment and able to use standard office equipment.
  • Must be able to communicate in verbal and written form.

Work environment:

  • Typical office environment with exposure to a minimal noise level.
  • Project HOPE employees work in the global health field and may be required to travel or work in countries where working conditions are classified as “hardship”
