Job Description

  • Direct Reports: Geotechnical Technician
Job Purpose
The Geotechnical Engineer is responsible to provide geotechnical support to the mining department and mining contractors to ensure that the mine functions effectively and safety. To maintain and support procedures and work practices aimed at preventing accidents or injuries. Supervise the Geotechnical subgroup of the Mining Department.
 
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
  • Comply with all Company Policies and Procedures. 
  • Identify, rectify and report any hazards, accidents or injuries immediately to your supervisor.
  • Perform functions in an environmentally sustainable manner in line with SD-GOLD & Namdini Values.
  • Implement and monitor quality control measures to ensure that mining activities meet specified standards and contractual obligations.
  • Establish, implement, document, and maintain standards, systems, and processes to ensure ongoing updates to an integrated mine geotechnical model, containing interpretations of the geotechnical, hydrogeological, rock mass properties and behavior data, to ensure compliance with Namdini designed Geotechnical criteria.
  • Ensure compliance to design by monitoring actual excavations against the designs and collaborating with relevant stakeholders further to improve future designs, planning and execution activities. 
  • Review and communicate work practices to reduce the risk of injury from geotechnical hazards and monitor that all work activities and plans comply with relevant regulations.
  • Ensure adequate geotechnical consideration is captured in all aspects of mine design, planning and scheduling, including short, medium, and long-term mine planning.
  • Carry out stability analysis of excavations and analysis of designs through kinematics, empirical and numerical techniques.
  • Plan & manage the installation of mine wide geotechnical monitoring systems
  • Prepare and assist in the mining department budget process.
  • Perform any other related duties based on the exigencies of the company as assigned by the Supervisor. 

Required Skills or Experience

Minimum qualification (s)
  • BSc in Degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Mining Engineering or Geological Engineering 
  • Minerals Commission Forman Certificate of Competency.
Experience (Minimum)
  • Proven experience in mining operations, with a minimum of 3 years in a supervisory role focused on contractor management. 
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge in mining equipment.
  • Experience with large-scale open-pit hard rock mining.
  • Competent with demonstrated skills in spreadsheet and presentation applications, word processing and database applications. 
  • Software skills including, Surpac, MODFLOW and Dips 
Knowledge (In-depth)
  • In-depth knowledge of safety regulations and environmental compliance.
  • Must demonstrate well-developed oral and written communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build positive relationships with contractors.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of standards, methods, and procedures to work situations.
  • Ability to foster a culture of safety awareness and compliance among team members, always promoting a safe working environment.
