Job Description

  • Location: West Legon-Accra, Ghana
  • Duration: 12 months
  • Reports to: Country Director and HQ Comms team
  • Consultancy Agreement Salary Range: GHS7,500 – GHS8,500 per month, commensurate with experience.

 

Role Overview

The Communication Officer Consultant will be responsible for developing and implementing effective communication strategies aimed at improving public understanding of heavy metal exposure risks and the importance of proper ULAB management practices. This role will involve creating engaging content for various platforms, managing media relations, facilitating stakeholder involvement, and planning outreach activities. By utilizing innovative communication methods, the consultant will aim to foster collaboration between governmental and non-governmental entities while empowering local communities to actively participate in heavy metal pollution reduction efforts.

Key Responsibilities

Media Engagement:

  • Identify and build relationships with media professionals and organizations relevant to environmental health, waste management, and public health.
  • Draft and distribute press releases, media advisories, and other materials that promote project activities and achievements.
  • Organize media events and press conferences to highlight project milestones or urgent issues related to lead exposure.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Actively engage stakeholders, including governmental bodies, NGOs, community organizations, and local leaders, to promote collaboration and enhance project visibility.
  • Plan and organize outreach activities, workshops, and community events to raise awareness of heavy metal such as lead pollution and exposure issues.
  • Facilitate dialogues and meetings to gather stakeholder input and build partnerships that support safe recycling initiatives.

Social Media Management:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive social media strategy that aligns with project goals.
  • Create and schedule engaging content for various platforms (e.g., Instagram, X, Facebook) to raise awareness about lead poisoning and ULAB management.
  • Monitor, analyze, and report on social media performance, adjusting strategies as necessary to increase audience engagement.

Design of Communication Materials:

  • Create informative and visually appealing communication materials, including flyers, posters, and brochures based on project key messages.
  • Collaborate with project team members to ensure all materials align with branding and messaging guidelines.

Production of Audiovisual Materials:

  • Plan, script, and oversee the production of 2 short educational videos aimed at highlighting lead exposure risks and the benefits of proper ULAB management.
  • Develop a radio advertisement campaign to reach broader and diverse audiences, ensuring effective massages about lead poisoning prevention.
  • Design billboard advertising campaigns to communicate key project messages in public spaces.

Reporting:

  • Prepare regular reports on project activities, communication activities, media coverage, stakeholder engagement, and social media analytics to assess the impact and effectiveness of communication strategies.
  • Provide updates and reports to the Country Director on progress, challenges, and recommendations for improving outreach strategies and activities.

Key Deliverables

  • Social media content calendar and engagement reports.
  • Press releases and media engagement materials.
  • Communication materials (e.g., 5,000 flyers and 1,000 posters) produced.
  • Four educational videos completed and disseminated.
  • Completed radio advertisement and billboard designs.
  • Bi-monthly communication activity reports detailing outcomes, analyses, and stakeholder engagement efforts.

Required Skills or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, Media Studies, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in communication roles, preferably in public health, environmental health, or non-profit sectors.
  • Proven track record in managing social media platforms and campaigns.
  • Experience in media relations and engagement with journalists and media houses.
  • Proficiency in designing communication materials and producing audiovisual content.
  • Strong writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with targeting audiences in Ghana and understanding community engagement dynamics.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team and engage with diverse stakeholders.
