Job Description

A vacancy exists in our Mining Department for the position of: GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEER

JOB PURPOSE
The Geotechnical Engineer will be required to undertake preliminary geotechnical activities to ensure sustainable mining operations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Implement and maintain safety, health and environmental policies and procedures, and ensure to maintain a healthy working environment.
  • Keep and update plans, sections of pits slopes and respective hydrogeological regimes within and around the pit and other operational areas.
  • Supervise in-pit and ex-pit hydrogeological situations and consequently advice on the location of sumps, ditches and drainage berms.
  • Supervise the installation of piezometers in ex-pits boreholes and on tailings embankment.
  • Plan and supervise drilling during geotechnical investigation for open pit slope designs.
  • Update Geotechnical database.
  • Advise pit Supervisors and Mining Engineers on pit wall stability as required for open pit designs.
  • Monitor drill and blasting activities that impact on the integrity of final pit walls and advise on weaker grounds where drilling and blasting activities could be optimized.
  • Undertake geotechnical and geological mapping using the scan line method.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationship with mine geology, mine operations, dewatering, and mine engineering groups to achieve operational efficiency.
  • Identify training and development needs of immediate team members and organizes or recommend appropriate training interventions

Required Skills or Experience

Knowledge

  • A degree in Geotechnical Engineering /Civil Engineering/Geophysics from a recognized institution.
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ post qualification work experience in a similar position.
  • The Minerals Commission’s certificate in geotechnical engineering will be an added advantage.
  • Must be conversant with the Minerals and Mining Regulation, 2012 and related laws of Ghana, and able to interpret and apply these laws and regulations.
  • High degree of working exposure to specialized geological software and other software such as Datamine, Surpac, Rocscience, AutoCAD etc.
  • Previous work experience using 3D modeling software or similar software package required.
  • Generation of geological and geotechnical 3D models from data obtained from the field using 3D geotechnical software.

  • Results oriented drive and solid work ethics, with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to train and mentor team members and demonstrate safety leadership.
  • Willingness and ability to perform field work in an extreme mining environment.
  • Must possess a valid Ghanaian driving license and the ability to drive in rough terrain.
