Job Description
The Fibre Optic Network Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining fibre optic communication systems to ensure high-performance and reliable network infrastructure. The role involves network planning, testing, and troubleshooting, as well as providing technical support to ensure optimal operations.
Responsibilities
- Network Design and Planning:
- Design and develop detailed fibre optic network layouts, including backbone, distribution, and access networks.
- Conduct site surveys to assess feasibility and optimal deployment routes.
- Utilize GIS and CAD tools to create network blueprints and plans.
- Installation and Deployment:
- Oversee and manage the deployment of fibre optic cables, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
- Undertake splicing, termination, and testing of fibre cables.
- Coordinate with civil works teams for trenching, ducting, and aerial installations.
- Testing and Troubleshooting:
- Perform OTDR, power meter, and other tests to ensure fibre quality and performance.
- Diagnose and resolve network issues, including signal loss and hardware malfunctions.
- Maintain detailed records of test results and network configurations.
- Network Maintenance:
- Ensure regular maintenance and inspection of fibre networks to prevent outages.
- Respond to network faults and outages, providing swift resolutions.
- Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate documentation of fibre network designs, configurations, and updates.
- Prepare technical reports and present findings to stakeholders.
- Collaboration and Support:
- Work closely with project managers, technicians, and clients to ensure smooth project execution.
- Provide technical support and training to installation teams.
Required Skills or Experience
Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in fibre optic network design, deployment, and maintenance.
- Proficiency in fibre optic testing tools such as OTDR, power meters, and splicing machines.
- Knowledge of GIS mapping tools and CAD software.
- Familiarity with industry standards, such as ITU-T, ANSI, and IEEE.
- Strong understanding of fibre optic technologies, including GPON, DWDM, and FTTH.
